In the United States and
Canada, paralegals may work independently as freelancers in private practice as
well as directly under the employ of individuals or corporations. Some
paralegals opt for working independently, but are still required to abstain from
performing lawyer-only tasks. The majority of paralegals work for law firms,
solo-practitioner attorneys, the government, or in legal departments of large
corporations, which are headed by in-house attorneys.
As paralegals have become more
recognized in the work place, their titles have become somewhat confusing. In
some areas of the United States, members of the legal community prefer calling
paralegals legal assistants, while the term paralegal is used in other areas.
The most reputable associations and organizations have continuously recognized
the use of paralegal. In 1997, the American Bar Association's House of Delegates
adopted the use of paralegal in addition to legal assistant. After the ABA's
move, several associations adopted their definition. These associations are the
National Association of Legal Assistants, the Legal Assistant Management
Association and the American Association for Paralegal Education. Since then,
the Legal Assistant Management Association changed its name to the International
Paralegal Management Association.
